LORD, I CANNOT, BUT YOU CAN!’

Have you ever tried to break a bad habit on your own? You probably found that when you tried to stop it by sheer willpower, you saw improvement for a while, and then bounced back to square one. Worse, you found yourself bringing on the very thing that you were trying not to do. And your condition is worse than before you started your “I’m going to quit” program!
The changes were temporary because it was you doing it.
This is one of the reasons men could not keep the hole law of Moses (613 commandments). Moses gave the law, then they would break it, then he gave more law and the people would break it, then more law. The only person who kept the whole law was Jesus!
I used to be a chain-smoker. I would tell myself, “If there is a will, there is a way!” But I discovered that with willpower, I could stop smoking for a hour or two, and then I would succumb to the pull of nicotine again. The harder I tried to stop the harder it felt. I got very discourage about my addiction.
I realize that I cannot stop smoking. I cannot, but You can break my habit, Lord. And every time I lit up, I would say, “Lord, I am trying to stop smoking, but I cannot. I trust You.
Well, in the very same year, I one day told my mom that I quite smoking for good. In time my cravings to smoke vanished! When asked how I succeeded, I say, “It is entirely God and none of me! It is all by His grace.” Today I am lost to the desire of smoke. This is true transformation.
…“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9
When you receive the grace of God to do for you what you cannot do, you will experience effortless and permanent change on the inside, which in turn changes your actions on the outside. The Bible tells us that God works in us to give us both the will and ability to perform what He desires. It is God who removes the old want to’s and gives us new ones. And He even gives us the power to carry them out!
When Jesus died on the cross he said ” it is FINISHED”
Look to His grace to do what you cannot do. Say, “Lord, I cannot, but You can!” Then, what you experience will not merely be behavior modification, but true and lasting inward transformation through the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 3:16 (KJV)
16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
